Summer Dress 2 - Gone to the Beach

Dear Laura,

"Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." - Ferris Bueller

On Thursday I took heed of Ferris Bueller's very famous words, took the day off work and went to the beach. It was wonderful, there is nothing quite like last minute plan changes and instead of being at my desk,  I found sand between my toes. I love the beach, I want to swim in the sea everyday, I want to build sandcastles and sleep with the sun warming my body. We went to Assateague island which is a national park with white sand beaches, wild horses and turquoise seas. It was bliss and conveniently it gave me a chance to wear my new dress.

I whipped this one up last weekend and it was surprisingly easy, I carefully measured myself and cut and hoped it would fit around me. I learnt how to put in, what I think might be called a yoke, which made the arm holes and head holes nice and neat and easy to deal with. I made the darts a little shallower and they turned out fairly well and this time I put a zip up the back. That was the best, it made everything so much easier. I put to pockets on the front because dresses with pockets are the best, my sewing here wasn't great but I love how it turned out. It is so comfortable and it will be a staple in my wardrobe for a long time!

Lots of love

Summer Dress 2

Dear Laura,

This deck chair material has been on my ebay watch list for at least a year. I love it so much but couldn't think of what to make with it to justify the purchase. Well now I do. What is even more exciting is that the design is by Julie Murphy of  Jack and Lulu who I have been following on instagram for a while. I love that I have a connection with the designer of the fabric it makes it feel so much more personal. I can't wait to sew with it, I feel like it is going to be my go to summer dress this year. I need to get going because I have one more summer dress to do and June is moving along fast!

Slippery Slippers

Dear Laura,

A little while ago I was thinking of making some slippers for a little person, but it is hard when there are no small feet around to figure out the sizing, so instead I decided to experiment on myself. They are a little small but otherwise fit pretty well. I can see that I need some padding in the soles, currently it is just two pieces of material, but for the next pair I will put some batting in for a bit of squish. They are surprisingly easy to make and I am looking forward to perfecting the pattern. The cross over is a bit of a pain with a lining so I am thinking of making a different style next. I am excited about some more trials!

Doggy Updates

Dear Laura,

I haven't talked much about Chaika here, on instgram however she is my source of inspiration, and so I think it is time for an update. Little Chaika is 7 months old and rather a lot bigger than when we got her. She is coming to work with me two days a week and generally being a cutey. I am very much enjoying having a dog, she is naughty and silly and very occassionally she nips my bum to make me play with her which makes me laugh so uncontrollably I can't discipline her. Mostly though she is sweet and cuddly and gives us an enormous amount of joy. I hope these pictures give you some joy as well.

Little Dresses Made From Fireflies

Dear Laura,

I think it is clear how much I love dresses, well I am hoping my niece is going to love them as well. Luckily she is only 3 at the moment so she doesn't have a lot of choice! I am also a sucker for fabric, all and every piece of fabric. There is a new series from Michael Miller that I found a little while ago called "children at play" and "wee wander" designed by Sarah Jane. I have fallen completely in love with the entire series and now I am finding children to send things made from the fabric too.

The first fabric I fell in love with was the children collecting fire flies in the fields on a summers evening. One of my very favourite things about living in the US is that I too get to see fire flies in the summer. They are the most magical insects and I will never tire of watching them, get so excited the moment I spot one that I run outside and watch it until it disappears, they make my heart sing. I couldn't think of a better little dress than this one. I really hope she likes it, I bought a pattern but it looked so complicated and like it would take so much time to figure out that I ended up just making this one up. I am hoping that it fits, fingers crossed! It went in the post today so hoping to get word soon.

Lots of love

Annie

p.s. I also made this pillow case which is going to wing its way across the pond to a new baby soon as well...
