Introducing... Chaika

Dear Laura,

It was decided sometime ago that we would like to get a dog but both R and I had very different ideas about what type of dog we would get. I wanted a cutey little stupid loving spaniel and he wanted an incredibly clever collie. It seemed we were worlds apart. Then who should show up but little Chaika. R kept asking if I liked Borzoi, fairly clever but also cute and cuddly. I have never had a big dog so I was really concerned if I could manage, they are, however, utterly beautiful and elegant.

We found a super cute one and the breeder answered all my questions and reassured me that although big, they are gentle and well tempered. So it was decided. Off we went on a mamouth road trip through the snow up to New England to meet little Chaika. Obviously the moment we met her she melted our hearts and continues to do so everyday. She is beautiful, sweet, well tempered and wonderfully behaved most of the time. Our lives have been somewhat turned upside down and we are loving every minute of it.

p.s. I am totally obsessed with her and post numerous pictures everyday on instagram if you would like to see more, my instagram name is nimblefingered (or you can click on the camera above my picture on the top left). Sorry to all those of you who do follow me on instagram and are sick of Chaika pictures. I will try to vary my subjects soon.

Tailoring and Fixing

Dear Laura,

A long time ago, one of my friends asked me to do some trendy tailoring on his favourite jacket for him. Now this both filled me with dread, what if I mess up his favourite jacket? what if I am not neat enough? and excitement, this was new type of project for me and would really force me to focus on details. What he wanted was for his jacket to have workable buttons and bright blue button holes to stand out against the grey wool of the jacket. Eventually I plucked up the courage to give it a go. I unpicked everything so carefully so I would only cut when absolutely necessary in case something went wrong, I could always go and put it back the way it was before. Luckily things were ok, not brilliant but ok, there were a few more finishing touches I would have liked to do to the jacket before giving it back but we had had it for so long that I let it go before it was perfect. It was fun to work on and definitely gave me some good precision practice with my sewing.

before

Cutting and adjusting the lining

Choosing the right colour threads

Choosing the right buttons

And now I do not have an after picture which is unfortunate! so I think you will have to imagine it, until I get my friend to take a photo.

Lots of love

Leeli Update

Dear Laura,

As you might remember, I tried to make a rag doll for my niece for christmas, however there was a question as to whether she was too scary or not, you can read about that here. Well after some extremely helpful advice in the comments on that post as well as my desperate call on instagram it turned out a three year olds judgment was the most useful, thanks Bee from the linen cloud, I managed to rearrange her face a little and I think she is rather sweet now. My niece seemed to like her but my parents out did me with a lovely peppa pig which was firmly placed under her arm for the entirety of christmas. Rather pleasingly though, she saw a picture of Leeli on my phone later on and pointed and with a big smile said dolly. This is what she calls all her dollies. I am going to call it a success but I have now learnt that making dollies is quite a bit harder than I first thought. I hope you like her new look.

Here is a reminder of what she used to look like

Cushions Cushions Cushions

Dear Laura,

I love soft furnishings, I LOVE them, the idea of all that lovely fabric on display in your house to admire whenever possible. This is why I make so many cushions. The other day I had some time off and rather than do something sensible like making a new dress, trousers, skirt, or one of the million baby/wedding presents I have on my list, I made some more cushions! They are so quick and satisfying. So here they are, my two new cushions.

Lots of love

Annie
